VIDEOS FOR PEACE presents

Dalai Lama Renaissance

With Guest appearance by Director and Producer Khashyar Darvich

Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church,   55 Eckley Lane, Walnut Creek 94596

Sponsored by Mt. Diablo Peace & Justice Center.

Co-sponsored by FriendlyFavors.org, the Peace Committee of the Social Justice Council of MDUU Church and the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County

Dalai Lama Renaissance At the edge of the Millennium, The Dalai Lama of Tibet invited 40 of the West's leading, most innovative thinkers in their respective fields to his residence tucked away in the Himalayan mountains of Northern India to discuss the world's problems and how we can solve them. What transpired was unexpected and powerful, and was captured by an 18 person, 5 camera film crew from The Wakan Foundation for the Arts during the week-long meeting and exploration of the future of mankind. The resulting feature-length documentary, Dalai Lama Renaissance, produced and directed by Khashyar Darvich, is narrated by Harrison Ford, and has won 12 international awards and is the official selection of over 40 international film festivals.

So successful was the film that a second volume was produced: Dalai Lama Renaissance Volume 2: A Revolution of Ideas. Where the first Dalai Lama Renaissance film led audiences on their own inner journey of personal transformation, the second volume is a more in-depth, intimate discussion between the Dalai Lama and some of the greatest thinkers of our time.

Volume One and a portion of Volume Two will be shown, with a refreshments and discussion/Q&A with the Director in between them.

Admission: NEW PRICES: $15 ($12 for Peace Center and MDUUC members). $7 Students. No one turned away for lack of funds.

Conversations with Terrorists: Middle East Leaders on Politics, Violence and Empire / An Evening with Reese Erlich

Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, 55 Eckley Lane, Walnut Creek 94596
Peabody Award winning journalist Reese Erlich returns to Walnut Creek to talk about his new book, Conversations with Terrorists: Middle East Leaders on Politics, Violence and Empire.

Drawing on original research and firsthand interviews, Conversations with Terrorists offers critical portraits of six Middle Eastern leaders who are sometimes labeled as terrorists: Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad, Hamas top leader Khaled Meshal, Israeli politician Geula Cohen, Iranian Revolutionary Guard founder Mohsen Sazargara, Hezbollah spiritual advisor Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Fadlallah, and former Afghan Radio and Television Ministry head Malamo Nazamy. Veteran journalist Reese Erlich offers them a chance to explain key issues and to respond to charges leveled by the United States. Critiquing these responses and synthesizing a broad range of material, Erlich shows that yesterday’s terrorist is today’s national leader, and that today’s freedom fighter may become tomorrow’s terrorist. He concludes that the global war on terror has diverted public attention from the war’s real goal—expanding U.S. influence and interests in the Middle East—and offers policy remedies.

Erlich will be available to sign copies of his new book along with his previous works, Dateline Havana and The Iran Agenda.

Admission: $15 ($12 Peace Center members); $7 students. No one turned away for lack of funds.

Awakening the Dreamer Changing the Dream Symposium

Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, 55 Eckley Lane, Walnut Creek

Through dynamic group interactions, leading edge information, and inspiring multimedia, participants of this half-day event are inspired to reconnect with their deep concern for our world, and are empowered to make a difference.

Designed with the collaboration of some of the finest scientific, indigenous and activist minds in the world, the Symposium explores the current state of our planet from a new perspective, and connects participants with a powerful global movement to reclaim our future.

It is an exploration of four questions:

*Where Are We? - An examination of the state of environmental, social justice and spiritual/personal well-being
*How did We Get Here? - Tracing the root causes that lead to our current imbalance
*What's Possible for the Future? - Discovering new ways of relating with each other, with the Earth and looking at the emerging Movement for change
*Where do We go from here? - Considering the stand we want to be in the world and our personal and collective impact

If you are ready to be disturbed, inspired and moved to action, and to be introduced to a thriving community of committed cohorts, then join us in exploring the most critical concerns of our times, and discover new opportunities to make a real difference in accelerating the emergence of an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, and socially just human presence on this planet!

Wednesday, September 8, 6:00 - 7:00 PM
Join the debate between Rep. George Miller and Tea Party opponent Rick Tubbs
Travis Credit Union Auditorium, 1 Travis Way, Vacaville
Join the audience during a live debate on September 8th in Vacaville from 6 pm to 7 pm between me and my opponent in the November election. A Tea Party Republican is running against me who would take America back to the failed policies of George W. Bush that rewarded Wall Street and big insurance companies and wrecked the economy. My challenger, Rick Tubbs, would extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich, cut spending on critical community services, and eliminate regulations that hold corporations accountable, protect workers' lives and safeguard consumers. We can't go back to that. We must keep moving America forward.

Please let me know if you can attend the debate, and let me know if you want to order a T-Shirt, a bumper sticker or a lawn sign. Email: dave@georgemillerforcongress.com. Thank you for your support!

The Contra Costa Democratic Party presents Joshua Holland
The United Democratic Campaign Community Center, 2737 Clayton Road, Concord
Join us at a book discussion with Joshua Holland, AlterNet senior editor/writer and author of The Fifteen Biggest Lies about the Economy: And Everything Else the Right Doesn't Want You to Know about Taxes, Jobs, and Corporate America.

Taxes kill growth. Labor unions hurt their members. Government regulation destroys jobs. These are just a few of the biggest lies in the web of misinformation spun by conservatives and the Chamber of Commerce. Holland's book dissects each malicious fiction to show how the Right is just plain wrong on the economy-wrong on jobs, wrong on the deficit, wrong on taxes, wrong on trade.
With the economy set to be the driving issue before and after the 2010 midterm elections, The Fifteen Biggest Lies about the Economy sets the record straight on every part of the conservatives' economic agenda.

Suggested donation -$5 at door
A book sale and signing will follow the presentation.

Solar and Green Building tour
Starting location to be announced

Nor Cal Solar is joining the non-profit American Solar Energy Society (ASES) and hundreds of solar-savvy installers and grassroots organizations throughout America to collectively showcase more than 5,000 solar-powered homes, schools and businesses-- in Contra Costa County and across North America -- for the 15th Annual National Solar Tour, the world’s largest grassroots solar event.

The event is designed to introduce the solar technologies they are using to 1) drastically reduce monthly energy bills, 2) reduce harmful carbon emissions, and 3) enjoy rich tax credits and cash incentives as they improve their property values.
On October 2, 2010, Nor Cal Solar is organizing open house tours of homes and businesses in the greater Contra Costa area.

The self-guided tours, which last year attracted more than 150,000 people in 49 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, afford participants the direct perspectives of homeowners and installers about the costs, processes and economic and environmental benefits of going solar. The tours also give East Bay residents a glimpse at how a variety of solar systems look in and around structures with different architectural styles.
This event, whose theme this year is “Be Solar Inspired,” is free and open to the public Learn more about sponsoring, hosting or volunteering for a tour in your community at: http://www.NationalSolarTour.org.

Climbers for Peace (CFP) is sponsored by Sister Cities-Santa Rosa-Cherkasy and Veterans for Peace. CFP has been bringing ordinary citizens from different countries together for various outdoor adventures for many years. By demonstrating that people with different languages and cultures can cooperate in a spirit of trust and friendship, we are able to inspire people to work in harmony towards world peace.

CPF 7 will explore the canyon lands of four Southwestern States, including Zion, Bryce, Gran Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Mesa Verde National Parks.
We expect 15-20 participants from Ukraine, Russia and Germany and are looking for 15-16 adventurous Americans to accompany them.

You must be physically fit and able to do fairly strenuous hikes of up to 10-13 miles with significant altitude changes and rugged terrain. We will be camping in tents and cooking our own food, so everyone will be expected to help and work together.
The cost for gas, food, passenger van and camping fees will be approximately $490-630 per person for the 2 weeks.
